The Entire Story of the Texas State Penitentiary — America's Busiest Execution Chamber
🎧 Listen to Solitary Redemption on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/033P9rO... Built in 1849 as Texas's first prison, the Walls Unit in Huntsville has spent 177 years at the center of American punishment. Behind its fifteen-foot red-brick walls, convict leasing killed inmates at a rate of 147 per thousand. An electric chair built by prisoners executed 361 men over four decades. A drug lord held the prison library hostage for eleven days. And in 1982, Charlie Brooks Jr. became the first person in history to die by lethal injection, seven minutes after the drugs entered his veins, inside the same room where more than 600 people have followed him since. This is the complete story. From the frontier origins and the convict lease camps, through the Carrasco siege and the world's first lethal injection, to the peak year of 2000 when Texas executed 40 people in twelve months. The back half of this video reconstructs one composite execution day, minute by minute, built from the testimony of wardens, chaplains, guards, and journalists who lived through the ritual hundreds of times. The warden who oversaw 89 executions and questioned whether it was right. The guard who broke down after 120. The chaplain who felt the heartbeat stop through the condemned man's shirt. The villain of this story is not a person. It is the routine itself. 📖 SOURCES & FURTHER READING • "Witness to an Execution" — StoryCorps (Peabody Award-winning oral history of the Walls death house team) • "Charlie Brooks' Last Words" — Dick J.
