The Rise and Ruin of St. Elizabeth's Hospital - The Asylum That Held America's Deadliest Assassins

Right now, four thousand Department of Homeland Security employees go to work every morning inside a building that used to be a psychiatric hospital. More than four thousand former patients are buried in unmarked graves across the same grounds. St. Elizabeths opened in 1855 as the first federally funded psychiatric hospital in the United States. Dorothea Dix lobbied Congress to build it, picked the hilltop site overlooking the Anacostia River herself, and insisted on a Kirkbride design meant to heal through sunlight, fresh air, and dignity. Congress promised "the most humane care and enlightened curative treatment" for the nation's mentally ill. By the 1950s, the hospital held over 7,500 patients in a facility built for 250. Its wards confined Richard Lawrence, the first man to attempt the assassination of a sitting U.S. president. It held Ezra Pound for twelve and a half years on treason charges, turning his room into the most unusual literary salon in American history. And it confined John Hinckley Jr. for over 34 years after he shot President Ronald Reagan. This documentary traces the full arc. The founding idealism.
