The Entire Story of Oregon State Asylum - The Real 'Cuckoo's Nest' and Its 3,423 Forgotten Urns
In 2004, Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney opened a door at the back of Oregon State Hospital in Salem and found 3,423 copper canisters of cremated human remains. They had been corroding in a storage room since 1913. Nobody had come for them. This is the complete 140-year story of Oregon State Hospital. From its founding in 1883 as the Oregon State Insane Asylum, built on the Kirkbride Plan for 412 patients, to the overcrowded decades that packed 3,545 people into the same building. From the 1942 mass poisoning that killed 47 patients through contaminated scrambled eggs, to the lobotomy and forced sterilization programs that followed. From Ken Kesey's novel to the day Miloš Forman brought Jack Nicholson and a film crew inside the real hospital and hired 89 patients as extras to make One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, the film that swept all five major Academy Awards. And from the 2004 discovery of those forgotten urns to the memorial that now displays them behind glass so nobody can look away again. Among the unclaimed dead was Jewett Williams, a Civil War veteran of the 20th Maine who fought at Gettysburg. His ashes sat in a numbered canister for 94 years before the Patriot Guard Riders carried them across the country on motorcycles and buried him with military honors in Maine. The villain of this story is not any single person. It is anonymity. The system that allowed thousands of people to disappear inside an institution and never be claimed. The memorial exists to make that disappearance impossible. This is The Quiet Wards. Behind the iron gates of America's asylums, state schools, reform schools, and sanatoriums lived millions of people the country chose not to see. We go inside each one and tell its entire story. These are documentaries, not ghost stories. 🎧 Listen to "Solitary Redemption" on Spotify 📚 References Oregon State Hospital Memorial (Oregon Health Authority) https://www.oregon.gov/oha/osh/pages/...
