But that execution did not go according to plan. A problem with the lethal injection equipment stretched the procedure to roughly eighteen minutes, turning his death into a national story overnight. The prison where it happened was Stateville Correctional Center, a maximum security facility that would remain in continuous operation until its one hundredth year. You would think a building like that, sitting quietly behind its wall for a century, would have settled into something ordinary. Prisons are supposed to blend into the background of a state, doing their grim, invisible work while the rest of the world moves on. But that same quiet hid something else: a hundred years where the state ran experimental medical research on the men inside its walls, a hundred years of riots never fully explained to the public, and, on one quiet night in the spring of nineteen ninety four, an execution that went wrong in front of the entire country.
