1,003 DEAD, 4,462 MISSING as Rescuers Race to Reach 500 Trapped in Nepal Flood Tunnels

The death toll from the catastrophic Nepal-Tibet floods has passed 1,000 as rescuers race to reach hundreds of workers believed to be trapped inside mud-filled hydropower tunnels. As of September 1, at least 1,003 people had been confirmed dead across Nepal and Tibet, while 4,462 remained missing. Nepalese authorities reported 987 deaths and 3,916 missing, while Chinese officials confirmed 16 deaths and another 546 people unaccounted for in Tibet. The latest rescue operation is focusing on 12 devastated hydropower projects across Nepal. About 900 workers remain missing, with roughly 500 believed to be trapped inside underground tunnels blocked by mud, rocks, water and flood debris. Nepalese Army teams and international specialists are using excavators, rock-breaking equipment, helicopters and temporary bridges to reach the disaster zones. Footage released by the army showed rescuers entering dark tunnels, wading through deep mud and climbing over boulders as they searched for signs of life. At least 11,814 people have been rescued across Nepal, including hundreds of workers recovered from damaged hydropower sites. However, destroyed roads, collapsed bridges, landslides and unstable terrain continue to prevent emergency teams from reaching some of the worst affected communities. The missing include hundreds of foreign tourists, pilgrims and workers. Nepal has reported 583 missing foreign nationals, while another 261 foreigners remain unaccounted for in Tibet. Two Irish citizens, 46-year-old Santosh Sahu and 18-year-old Spandan Sahu, are among those still missing. The disaster began on August 26 when a glacial collapse high in the Himalayas sent an enormous surge of ice, rock, mud and meltwater crashing into the valleys below. The resulting floods swept away homes, schools, roads, bridges and entire communities along rivers running through Nepal and Tibet. Rescue teams with search dogs continue to comb through mud, rocks and wreckage as desperate families wait for news of thousands of missing loved ones. Authorities fear the death toll could rise further as crews finally reach remote communities cut off by the destruction.
