New information is emerging about the serious takeoff accident involving Vietnam Airlines Flight VN34 at Munich Airport. On August 15, 2026, the Boeing 787-9 was departing for Hanoi when it used essentially the entire runway, traveled beyond the paved runway end, struck runway lights, suffered a tail strike, and damaged several tires before becoming airborne. According to preliminary information from Vietnam’s aviation authority based on crew interviews, the aircraft’s speed briefly stopped increasing around halfway down the runway, then began accelerating again and reached V1. After V1, the crew reported another decrease in speed. The pilots continued the takeoff, and the aircraft eventually became airborne beyond the normal runway surface. In this episode, retired airline captain and naval aviator Captain Steeeve explains why V1 matters, what pilots expect during a normal takeoff roll, what abnormal acceleration can indicate, and why continuing the takeoff may still be the safest option after passing the critical decision speed. The exact cause remains under investigation, and investigators have not determined whether the issue involved the aircraft, its systems, the brakes, crew actions, or another factor.
