In this documentary, we explore Sal Island (Ilha do Sal), one of the most famous islands in Cape Verde. We swim among sharks, visit old salt mines inside a volcanic crater, search for sea turtles, and explore Santa Maria, the island’s tourism hub. One of the most impressive experiences was entering the shallow waters where juvenile sharks take refuge. There, we also discovered the complicated relationship between tourism, conservation, and the local communities that depend economically on these experiences. Then we visited Pedra de Lume, historic salt flats built inside the crater of an ancient volcano. Salt was once known as the island’s “white gold” and was exported to different parts of the world. Today, visitors can enter the extremely salty water and practically float without any effort. We also reached some of the beaches where thousands of sea turtles come to lay their eggs. But these shores face another problem: tons of trash carried by ocean currents can end up in Cape Verde from places thousands of kilometers away. Finally, we explore Santa Maria, Cape Verde, where enormous all-inclusive resorts, hotels, and new developments contrast with small local businesses and homes.
