I crossed the Pyrenees by motorcycle, following the Trans-Pyrenees route, from the Cantabrian Sea to the Mediterranean, traversing Spain, France, and Andorra on my BMW 450 GS. But this journey isn't just about roads and dirt tracks. I wanted to understand what these mountains hold: how the Pyrenees were formed, who their first inhabitants were, the legends of Basajaun and the witches of Zugarramurdi, the ancient smugglers' trails, the borders between Spain and France, the passage of armies and refugees, and the disappearance of glaciers that have lost a large part of their surface area in just a few decades. During this journey, we explored some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Pyrenees: Navarre, the Irati Forest, the Aragonese valleys, Ordesa National Park, high mountain passes, Andorra, the Cerdanya region, and finally Cap de Creus, where the mountain range plunges into the Mediterranean Sea. After years of traveling by motorcycle through remote parts of the world, this trip left me with an unexpected realization: We didn't have to go so far. Look what we have right here.
