In this Cape Verdean food documentary, we explore the markets and local food stalls of Praia to discover the real cuisine of Cape Verde, from its national dish, the famous cachupa, to flavors that are hard to find in tourist areas. We begin at Praia Municipal Market, trying fresh ingredients and some of the flavors that are part of Cape Verdean cuisine. Then we head into the streets in search of street food and small traditional restaurants. And of course, we had to try CACHUPA, the national dish of Cape Verde: a traditional preparation made mainly with corn, beans, vegetables, and different types of meat or fish. Every family can have its own version. We also try cachupa refogada, coffee grown in the volcanic soil of Fogo Island, traditional sweets, Cape Verdean-style fish, grogue, and a huge sea snail prepared as a local specialty. Cape Verdean cuisine reflects the history of these islands: African ingredients, Portuguese influence, Atlantic products, and recipes passed down from generation to generation. And because many of these traditional dishes are not easy to find in restaurants, we had to leave the tourist areas to discover what Cape Verdeans really eat.
