Hundreds of people live, farm, and rebuild their homes on land that has already been destroyed by an eruption once before. 🇨🇻 The last major eruption buried homes, crops, hotels, a church, and much of the village… but many families decided to return and rebuild in exactly the same place. Why would you go back to live next to a volcano that already destroyed your home? That is the question we try to answer. In this documentary, we explore Chã das Caldeiras and Pico do Fogo, meet survivors of two eruptions, walk among old houses buried beneath enormous lava flows, and discover how families rebuilt their lives using the same volcanic rock that covered the village. But the volcano does not only represent danger. 🌱 Volcanic soil is extremely fertile and makes it possible to grow grapes, fruits, and other foods in a landscape that seems uninhabitable. We also join a family during the traditional production of Fogo’s famous wine, made from grapes grown directly in this volcanic soil.
