People are keep asking me which cars they can still buy that don’t constantly talk to the manufacturer, push updates they never asked for, or require a special code just to get a basic repair done. They’re not looking for more features. They’re looking for less dependence, no jumbo center screens, no wifi, less connectivity and less nannies from the car brands. That question stuck with me because it points to something bigger than any single model year. You pay for the car. The title has your name on it. You handle the insurance, the maintenance, the fuel. Yet more and more of what happens under the hood - or in the software - seems to sit behind a gate controlled by the company that built it. I decided to dig into what Congress and the White House actually did on this year, because the headlines were not matching the documents. What I found is not the neat victory story some people are selling. Stay with me through this one. By the end you’ll see exactly how the rules around the car you already own are shifting, who benefits from the delay, and why the window to keep real control is closing faster than most drivers realize. Let’s start with the bill that actually moved. On May 21 the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced H.R. 7389, the Motor Vehicle Modernization Act of 2026, by a 48–1 vote. It’s sponsored by Republican Brett Guthrie of Kentucky. A lot of coverage treated that vote like a big win for owners and independent shops. I read the text. It is not the comprehensive fix. ➡️ Looking for Car Reviews?    / @car-smarts   ➡️ Buy me a Cup of Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/laurenfix ➡️ Check out The Drive with Lauren and Karl - Syndicated RADIO and Online - https://youtube.com/ ⁨@thedrivecarshow⁩ ➡️ SOCIAL MEDIA: X:   / laurenfix   FB:   / lauren.fix.the.car.coach   IG:   / carcoachreports   TT:   / laurenfixcarcoach   Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-625957 Truth: https://truthsocial.com/@laurenfix Substack: https://carcoachreports.substack.com/ ➡️ Check out our WEBSITE: https://www.CarCoachReports.com ©Automotive Aspects, Inc., 2026.
