I Ran Valvoline Restore & Protect for 20,000 Miles, Then Tore Down the Engine
Valvoline Restore & Protect makes some pretty impressive claims about its ability to clean engines and remove deposits. But does it actually work in a real engine? I decided to find out. In this long-term test, I ran Valvoline Restore & Protect for 20,000 miles over 16 months, documenting exactly what happened inside the engine. First, I take a look at Valvoline's marketing claims, including the IIIH Test that Valvoline uses to demonstrate the cleaning performance of Restore & Protect. Then I tear down the engine before using Restore & Protect to document its condition and establish a baseline. After documenting the deposits and overall condition, I reassemble the engine and put it back into service. Over the next 20,000 miles, I run four oil changes using Valvoline Restore & Protect, documenting the mileage and oil condition along the way. I also sent used oil samples out for laboratory analysis to see what the oil can tell us about what's happening inside the engine. Finally, I tear the engine down a second time and compare the results to the original teardown. So after 20,000 miles, did Valvoline Restore & Protect actually clean the engine? Let's tear it down and find out.
