Why Nobody Wants to Visit Cape Cod Anymore

Cape Cod was never meant to be permanent. A glacial sandbar left behind by the Ice Age, it was rejected by the Pilgrims in 1620 as too barren to settle and stripped of its forests by the colonists who came after them. For two centuries, whaling, fishing, and salt works kept it alive. When those industries collapsed in the mid-1800s, the Cape did something few places have ever pulled off — it deliberately reinvented itself as a vacation destination, using the railroad, the canal August Belmont carved through the sand in 1914, and the two bridges the Army Corps built in 1935 to funnel millions of visitors onto a narrow peninsula with no other way in or out. The Kennedys put it on the world stage. JFK preserved forty miles of coastline as a National Seashore. Artists, writers, and tourists poured in for over a century. Today Cape Cod generates $2.8 billion a year in visitor spending — and it is hollowing out from the inside. Median home prices have passed $750,000. Thirty-six percent of homes sit empty most of the year. The workers who keep the tourism economy running can no longer afford to live there. The bridges are functionally obsolete. The coastline erodes twelve to fifteen feet a year. Great white sharks patrol the surf. And the sand keeps shifting.
