How the Richest City on Earth Quietly Lost Everything: New Bedford, Massachusetts

In the 1850s, New Bedford, Massachusetts was the richest city per capita in America — possibly the world. Its wealth came from whale oil, the dominant fuel of the Industrial Revolution, and the spermaceti candles that lit the homes of the powerful. Whaling merchants built granite mansions along County Street, financed fleets of over three hundred ships, and employed thousands in the cooperages, candleworks, and sail lofts that lined the waterfront. Frederick Douglass found freedom here. Herman Melville shipped out from its harbor and wrote Moby-Dick. Then, on August 27, 1859, Edwin Drake struck oil in Titusville, Pennsylvania, and kerosene began replacing whale oil within a few years. What followed was a cascade — the Civil War's Stone Fleet, a Confederate raider burning New Bedford whalers in the Arctic, thirty-three ships crushed in the ice off Alaska in 1871 — that destroyed the American whaling industry and the city built on it. New Bedford reinvented itself around textile mills, became the largest cotton-weaving center in the world, and then lost that industry too. This is the story of the city that lit the world, and what happened when a cheaper light came along.
