Why Nobody Wants to Visit Bar Harbor, Maine Anymore
Bar Harbor was once the grandest summer resort in America. Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Morgans, and Astors built 222 mansions along Millionaires' Row. The Rodick House hotel had 400 rooms and a dining hall that seated a thousand. Then, in October 1947, a wildfire of unknown origin swept through Mount Desert Island and burned it all down — 67 estates, five historic grand hotels, 170 homes, and half of Acadia National Park. The cause was never determined. The cottages were never rebuilt. Motels replaced mansions. And the town that once hosted America's wealthiest families became a cruise ship port overrun by four million tourists a year — until the residents voted to turn the ships away.
