It's Free → https://debriefcrew.com On a rainy November night in 2023, a Cessna P210N pilot launched a cross-country flight with full tanks and just over four hours of fuel — but the weather kept moving the finish line farther away. The airline transport pilot departed Concord on a Part 91 personal IFR flight with topped-off tanks, roughly 89 gallons usable and about 4.2 hours of endurance. Low ceilings, light rain, and mist met him at the far end of the route, and the trip began to unravel one destination at a time. He abandoned his French Valley destination, then discovered his filed alternate's ILS was out of service by NOTAM. That forced a second diversion to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport for an ILS approach in night instrument conditions — with the fuel clock now working against him. During the approach he drifted off the localizer, went missed, and reported just 10 minutes of fuel remaining. A series of erratic turns and altitude changes followed before he announced he was completely dry. The airplane came down on a hillside in a residential area about three miles from the runway, and the pilot was fatally injured. The pattern here is a fuel plan with no real margin colliding with degraded instrument proficiency. A total loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion drove the outcome, and the NTSB noted contributing factors in the pilot's inadequate flight and fuel planning and his decision to fly in night IMC despite a lack of recent instrument experience — his logbooks showed no instrument currency and no actual or simulated instrument flight in the 19 months before the accident. A pilot behind him flew the same ILS and landed without issue. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ JOIN THE DEBRIEF CREW ON PATREON Ad-free videos and exclusive analysis From $5/month:   / pilotdebrief   ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ SOURCES NTSB Accident ID: WPR24FA037 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ABOUT PILOT DEBRIEF Pilot Debrief is hosted by Hoover, a retired F-15E pilot and current pilot for a major U.S. airline. Every video on this channel analyzes publicly released NTSB final reports, factual narratives, CVR/FDR transcripts, and docket evidence to extract practical safety lessons for general aviation pilots. We do not speculate beyond the evidence. We do not blame pilots for being human.
