Nepal Flood 2026 Explained: Where did all the water come from?
Drop a block of pure ice off a mountain a kilometre high and let every bit of the energy of that fall go into melting it. About three per cent of it turns to water. Three per cent. Eight minutes after a mountain came down on the Nepal-Tibet border on 26 August, a five-storey building at Rasuwagadhi was gone, and so was the ground it stood on. There was no glacial lake up there — a satellite would have seen one. So where did the water come from? This is the fifth film about that morning, and the one where I go back over what the first film told you. In that film I said the debris blocked the river, a lake built up behind it, and the blockage burst. That was the reading almost everyone had in the first forty-eight hours, and it came from Nepal's own Flood Forecasting Division rather than from nowhere. The gauge records have arrived since, and they put a much harder clock on the whole thing. Dozens of you ran the physics in the comments and concluded friction cannot melt enough ice to do this. You are right — and there is one step where the sum goes wrong. That is the spine of this film. Everything here is labelled ESTABLISHED, DISPUTED or UNKNOWN.
