Canada in "peril" with US as sole oil customer, Danielle Smith says as Trump makes Venezuela deal
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith pushed, again, for the plans for a West Coast oil pipeline through Canada to be accelerated just days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced he had made an oil deal with Venezuela. With the U.S. being Canada’s biggest customer of crude oil exports, Smith said the pipeline in question – among other future routes – would be the “right answer” to the potential threat of losing American business, so Canada could expand markets to not only Asia, but Europe too. “There's peril in having a single customer. We saw that historically when the shale oil revolution happened and our product became less valued by the U.S.,” Smith said. “I think that this is a demonstration of why we need to continue to develop new markets,” the premier added.
