I Tested A New CLASSIFIED Excavator Against Cat, Deere & Kubota

We traveled to SANY headquarters to get behind the controls of nearly their entire equipment lineup — but the real reason we were there was to put a brand-new classified SANY excavator prototype head-to-head against some of the biggest names. We compared the new SANY prototype against the John Deere 85P, Cat 308, Bobcat E88, Kubota KX080 and the current model SANY in one of the most thorough excavator comparisons I’ve ever been a part of. This wasn’t just a quick test drive around a dirt pile. We put all six machines through the same series of real-world challenges, including digging and backfilling trenches, track power hill climbs, swing power testing, swing brake testing, maintenance and engine-bay inspections, and precision log and rock stacking. For the digging tests, we cut trenches with benches on both sides and then backfilled them to compare hydraulic smoothness, cycle speed, breakout force, visibility and overall controllability. We also tested track power by climbing hills, then loaded the buckets with dirt and performed uphill side swings with the bucket tucked close to the machine, halfway extended and fully extended to see how well each machine’s swing system handled the load. We repeated similar tests downhill to evaluate swing brake holding power. Finally, we used the hydraulic thumbs to stack logs and rocks, which gave us a much better feel for each machine’s fine control, hydraulic smoothness and overall dexterity. We also opened up every machine and compared daily service access, fluid checks, filter locations and general ease of maintenance. At the end of the testing, all six operators independently ranked the machines — and the results were surprisingly consistent. The SANY prototype is one of only two machines currently in existence, and although the badging was covered and marked “CLASSIFIED,” it gives us a pretty good look at what may be coming next from SANY.
