For the second year in a row, the Kerrville and Texas Hill Country area has been hit hard by flooding, leaving families with destroyed homes, washed-away vehicles, and months of cleanup ahead. One of those families reached out after losing three vehicles in the flood, including a cherished 1981 Chevy that belonged to the Navy veteran’s grandfather. For Wrecker Rick, this recovery was about more than pulling old trucks and cars out of flood debris. It was about helping preserve a piece of family history and giving a veteran and his family a little hope after everything they had been through. Rick loads up the family and points the recently restored 1962 Kenworth toward Texas. But in true Murphys Diesel fashion, Murphy’s Law doesn’t take long to show up. The old Kenworth develops engine problems before it can make the journey, forcing Wrecker Rick to change plans and swap into the trusty Ranch Truck—a classic 2000 Peterbilt that has seen plenty of miles, breakdowns, recoveries, and adventures of its own. Surely the Peterbilt will make it without a problem… right? Not exactly. Mechanical problems strike again on the road to Texas, but Wrecker Rick isn’t known for giving up when a diesel truck breaks down on the side of the highway. With a little roadside troubleshooting, some old-school mechanic ingenuity, and the famous Wrecker Rick pocket pliers, the family gets the Peterbilt back on the road and continues toward Kerrville. Once they arrive in Texas, the real work begins. Wrecker Rick and the Murphys Diesel crew tackle multiple flood-damaged vehicle recoveries and successfully recover all three vehicles belonging to the Navy veteran and his family—including his grandfather’s cherished 1981 Chevy. But recovering the vehicles is only part of this story. The family has been displaced since the flood and has been staying in a friend’s apartment while trying to repair their home and rebuild their lives. After seeing what they were going through, Wrecker Rick and the family decided they couldn’t just recover the vehicles and leave. So Murphys Diesel stepped in to help with drywall, appliances, and some of the supplies this family needs to finally get back into their home. This is what Murphys Diesel has always been about: heavy towing, extreme vehicle recoveries, old diesel trucks, roadside repairs, classic semis, off-road adventures, and using what we have to help hardworking people when they need it most. From the restored 1962 Kenworth breaking down, to the classic Peterbilt Ranch Truck giving us problems, to recovering flood-damaged vehicles in Kerrville, Texas, this trip had just about everything you would expect from a Wrecker Rick adventure. But sometimes the biggest recovery isn’t the truck at the end of the winch line. Sometimes it’s helping a family recover a little hope.
