Salter Path, NC: The Fishing Village That Didn’t Own Its Land

Salter Path, North Carolina, is easy to drive through without realizing just how unusual its history really is. Long before much of modern Bogue Banks was developed, families were already living, fishing, and raising children here. But for generations, many Salter Path families did not hold individual deeds to the land beneath their homes. That eventually led to a legal battle involving New York landowner Alice Green Hoffman, an unusual 1923 court judgment, decades of uncertainty over land ownership, and — somehow — descendants of President Theodore Roosevelt. In this video, we dig into the history of Salter Path: the old settlements of western Bogue Banks, where the name came from, the fishing traditions that built the community, Alice Hoffman and the land dispute, the Roosevelt connection, and why Salter Path has managed to remain distinctly Salter Path even as the rest of the island changed around it.
