New York’s Most Important Highway Is Falling Apart
New York’s Most Important Highway Is Falling Apart The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is one of New York City’s most important transportation arteries, but after more than 70 years of heavy use, the city is running out of time to decide what comes next. For decades, politicians, engineers and residents have debated whether to rebuild the BQE, replace it, or completely rethink what belongs in its place. Now, Mayor Mamdani has unveiled a new $4 billion proposal to repair the aging triple cantilever and extend its life for another 40 years. In this video, we explore how the BQE became one of New York’s biggest infrastructure headaches, why previous attempts to fix it have failed, and whether Mamdani’s new plan can finally solve a problem decades in the making.
