Former PM stands down as MP triggering by-election

Former prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said Tuesday he will stand down as the MP for Holborn and St Pancras, a move that will trigger a by-election in the London seat. Starmer told his local newspaper, the Camden New Journal he felt it was the "right time" to leave the House of Commons and concentrate on new work in the field of international affairs. This follows his resignation as prime minister in July after months of pressure from his own backbenchers and finally the Makerfield by-election that saw Andy Burnham return to Westminster. The current Prime Minister is set to address MPs in parliament for the first time since becoming prime minister in July. The PM is expected to keep the statement on Tuesday broad and optimistic, and address specific themes, including the public control of services and decentralisation of power. • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@itvnews?lang=en Follow ITV News on Instagram:   / itvnews   Follow ITV News on Facebook:   / itvnews   Follow ITV News on X:   / itvnews
