US-Iran War Escalates as Fighting Returns After Weeks

The United States and Iran have resumed major hostilities after weeks of relative calm, with Washington carrying out strikes on Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets and Tehran reporting attacks on US military assets across the region. The US military said its strikes targeted Iranian air defences, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities, while Iran claimed attacks on US positions in Jordan and Iraq. The renewed fighting has raised fears of a wider regional escalation, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route. Iran’s Red Crescent said five people were killed and dozens wounded in a strike near a wedding in Sirik, while Jordan and Bahrain reported intercepting Iranian missiles and drones.
