Cúcuta and the surrounding metropolitan area awoke on high alert following a series of attacks attributed to the ELN. The most recent occurred in Los Patios, where a taxi bomb exploded in front of a police station, leaving one person dead and 11 wounded. Authorities also thwarted another attack by finding a vehicle loaded with explosives in the Agua Clara sector, on the road to Puerto Santander. In response to the escalating violence, Defense Minister Jorge Eduardo Mora praised the response of the security forces and assured that the State will confront the terrorist groups with all its resources. President Abelardo De La Espriella arrived in Cúcuta to lead an extraordinary security council meeting and gave the military and police 15 days to regain control of the area.
