The campaign went live August 31 and runs until September 30. Backers vote on which four pitches get built in two weeks, then vote again on which one gets polished and shipped under Double Fine's new small-games label, Double Fine Action Labs, with 2 Player Productions filming the whole thing. 🎮 But it's Tim Schafer's announcement video that's got Xbox fans talking. In it, Schafer jokes that during their seven years at Microsoft the studio was "forced to make propaganda pieces to support our parent company's massive investments in the lighthouse and pottery industries" - a nod to Keeper, their 2025 walking-lighthouse adventure. Some are reading it as a playful skit at their own expense. Others see a studio taking shots at the company that funded its passion projects for seven years, let its developers greenlight their own game jam ideas, spun them back out as independent in July, and let them keep their entire IP catalogue on the way out. Double Fine did have to lay off 23 staff, around 25% of the team, to reach a sustainable size. 💚 Also in this video: Xbox's backwards compatibility now spanning four generations, with original Xbox and Xbox 360 emulation letting you buy classics outright rather than renting them through a subscription.
