The Reason El Niño Always Destroys Itself

Every El Niño eventually ends and the strange part is that the mechanism that destroys it begins working almost as soon as the event starts. For years, Pacific trade winds store enormous amounts of warm water in the western Pacific. When those winds weaken, that heat begins moving eastward, triggering El Niño. But the same disturbance also sends a slower signal in the opposite direction. Months later, that response helps bring colder water back toward the surface, weakening the warm anomaly and pushing the Pacific back toward neutral conditions — sometimes all the way into La Niña. In this documentary, we explore Kelvin waves, Rossby waves, the Pacific warm pool, why El Niño tends to peak around December, and why even though scientists understand how the cycle shuts itself down, predicting exactly when it will happen remains surprisingly difficult.
