There used to be a sound televisions made when they had nothing to show you. Part of that static was the oldest light in the universe. The cosmic microwave background is what was released when the universe stopped being opaque, 380,000 years after the beginning, and it has been arriving from every direction ever since. It was detected four separate times before anyone worked out what it was. This is that story, told as a detective case in four parts — a Canadian observatory in 1941, two pigeons nesting in a Bell Labs antenna, the spacecraft that read the age and shape and composition of everything out of a photograph of the universe's first morning, and the questions still open tonight.
