The Pale Blue Dot: The Photo That Changed How We See Ourselves

The most reproduced photograph of Earth was taken thirty-four minutes before the camera that took it was switched off forever. It took eight years of refusals to get it, and under two seconds of open shutter to make. On 14 February 1990, six billion kilometres from home, Voyager 1 turned around and photographed the planet it came from. This is the story of how that frame was made — not the monologue it inspired, but the nine-year argument that produced it. Carl Sagan first asked in 1981 and was turned down six times, because aiming the camera that close to the Sun risked destroying it for an image everyone already knew would show nothing. The answer only changed when the spacecraft ran out of planets. What came back was a picture in which Earth occupies twelve hundredths of a single pixel, sitting inside a streak of light that is not a sunbeam at all, but a flaw in the lens assembly.
