Nach dem Tod von König Harald V. trat sein Sohn automatisch die Nachfolge an. Mit dem feierlichen Eid bekräftigte Haakon VIII. seine Verpflichtung, das Königreich Norwegen gemäß Verfassung und Gesetzen zu regieren. In seiner Ansprache erinnerte der neue Monarch an die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen Krone und Parlament und bekannte sich zu seinem Wahlspruch „Alles für Norwegen“.
