How Americans Took One 50-Foot Hill From Japanese on the 11th Try
Nine hundred yards of open farmland in southern Okinawa, and not one Japanese soldier pulled a trigger. May twelfth, 1945. Company G of the Twenty-Second Marines walks toward a rise of coral fifty feet high — too small for the mapmakers to draw. The company went in with 215 men and came out with 75. The Americans called it Sugar Loaf. Over the next six days the Sixth Marine Division went at that hill eleven times. Marines reached the crest again and again and could not stay on it twenty minutes. The division lost 2,662 men in ten days — roughly what Tarawa cost, spent on one hill. The survivors could describe everything done to them. Almost none could say where the fire had come from. On the eleventh attempt one American officer read that same ground differently.
