Why one sergeant's decision to leave his burning Sherman changed everything the 761st Tank Battalion knew about armored warfare — and why German forces learned to fear his name above all others in November 1944. November 10, 1944. The 761st Tank Battalion — first African American armored unit in combat — had lost 24 men and 14 tanks in 72 hours. Tank doctrine was clear: commanders fight from inside armor. Every training manual emphasized protection over exposure. Battalion officers enforced these rules strictly. They were all wrong. What Sergeant Warren Crecy understood that day wasn't about following Armor School doctrine. It was about winning when conventional tactics failed. By the end of the battle, other tank commanders started questioning everything they'd been taught. The results spoke louder than any manual. His approach spread through Patton's Third Army, credited with breaking multiple German counterattacks and demonstrating that sometimes the rules exist to be rewritten.
