U.S. ranchers react to Trump’s beef plan

Thousands of tons of tariff-free ground beef are being imported to the U.S. over 90 days to lower grocery prices. Some industry experts warn the move could create price volatility and harm long-term herd growth. The U.S. has its smallest cattle herd in 75 years. "We're back in the 1950s. It's pretty scary," said Tim Petersen of the Arizona Cattle Grower's Association. "We were paying 86 to 92 cents a pound live weight, and now it's double that. More than double that in some cases," Arcadia Meat Market owner Nick Addante said. President Trump announced 660 million pounds of ground beef will be imported tariff-free over 90 days to curb the rising beef prices. Some fear that could undercut ranchers with only a temporary impact on lowering ground beef prices. "It creates this whipping effect in the pricing," said Shawn Wood of the Arizona Farm Bureau. "So when the prices go down, there's not incentive to keep growing your herd." Any imported beef will still need to go through FDA inspections. Additionally, the Douglas Port has now reopened to livestock imports from Mexico after a year-long closure for screwworm concerns.
