MA v Lindsay Clancy - Paula Musgrove - Lindsay's Mother

Testimony of Paula Musgrove in the Lindsay Clancy trial regarding her daughter's mental health from October 2022 through January 2023: Witness Background • Family: Mother of Lindsay Clancy. Close to Lindsay, Patrick, and grandchildren Cora, Dawson, and Callan. Husband (retired school photographer) was in court. She is retired from Weight Watchers. They live in Connecticut and visited Duxbury two to three times a month. • Lindsay as a child: "Very good kid," "excellent student." Never in trouble with schools or police. • Lindsay as a mother: Dedicated, fun, loving. Always wanted many children. Motherhood was "the best thing that ever happened to her." Summer 2022 after Callan's birth they were "very happy." October 2022 • Change: About the second week of October, Lindsay became "very anxious" about returning to work because Callan struggled with a bottle. She sought more maternity leave. • October 19: Texted asking Paula to stay a couple of days so she could work. She was talking to a therapist. • October 20: "Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I'm really sick. Something is wrong." Insomnia. Anxiety medicine made things worse. She did not want to be alone. Paula came that day. Lindsay had been to the ER and came home slightly better but sleepless and afraid. Paula stayed about a week. November–December 2022 • Holidays: "Not getting better." Seeing doctors and taking prescribed meds. • Fear of being alone: Late November or early December she asked to sleep in bed with her mother, and did. • Kitchen confession: Early to mid-December, with Pat and Paula present, Lindsay said she "had thoughts of harming the children." Pat asked if she felt she could not be alone with them. She said no. Paula did not consider committing her or taking her to Connecticut. She was staying in the home and "was not concerned for the children's safety because I was there." McLean and January 2023 • McLean: Early January, voluntary admission. Paula stayed to help with the kids. January 4 text: discharging the next evening, follow-up with a different psychiatrist. • After discharge: Substantial weight loss. Irrational and paranoid about everyday things. "This isn't my mind." "This isn't me." Too afraid to drive. Paula drove school pickup. Lindsay feared teachers would know she was sick. Meds were "destroying her mind." • January 7–21: Paula went home after Cora's birthday. Daily texts (sometimes three a day) on sleep, meds, and mood. Kids went to the Science Museum, gym, gymnastics, Kingsbury Club, Cape Codder. Off Seroquel. Started amitriptyline January 16. Slightly better than a few weeks before, still not herself. • January 21–22 weekend: Bonfire with Pat and the older kids. Paula babysat Callan. Cora took a smiling couch photo. Driving home, Paula texted it was "nice to see you doing better." On cross she said that was encouragement, not what she actually observed. • January 25: Spoke to police the day after. In shock. Did not recall saying Lindsay seemed "improving" or "brighter lately." Redirect • Exhibit 277: October 23–24 texts. A "good" message on October 24 showed Paula had already gone back to Connecticut after the October 20 stay. 00:00:00 - MA v Lindsay Clancy - Paula Musgrove - Lindsays Mother 00:00:39 - Lindsay's Childhood, Character, and Family Relationships 00:02:44 - Summer 2022: A Happy and Active Household 00:03:49 - October 2022: Initial Changes in Lindsay's Demeanor 00:04:42 - The October 20 SOS Text Message 00:07:31 - Helping in Duxbury and Progressive Decompensation 00:09:49 - Late November: The Fear of Sleeping Alone 00:10:39 - January: Voluntary Hospitalization at McLean Hospital 00:11:40 - Post-Discharge Deterioration, Weight Loss, and Paranoia 00:13:20 - December Kitchen Confession: Thoughts of Harming the Children 00:14:04 - Courtroom Recess and Preparation for Cross-Examination 00:14:29 - Cross-Examination: Reacting to the December Confession 00:15:44 - Cross-Examination: October Text Timeline and "Doing Good" 00:18:14 - Cross-Examination: Why 911 Was Not Called 00:19:14 - Cross-Examination: January Daily Check-Ins and McLean Discharge 00:20:43 - Daily Texts: Museum of Science, Gymnastics, and Stopping Seroquel 00:23:42 - Marylou's Coffee and Everyday Family Activities 00:25:09 - Water Park Visit and Feeling "Not Like Myself" 00:27:22 - Psychiatrist Visit and Starting Amitriptyline 00:28:49 - Preparing for the January 21–22 Weekend Visit 00:30:29 - The Bonfire, the Smile Photo, and "Doing Better" Text 00:33:17 - Police Interview and State of Shock After the Tragedy 00:34:21 - Redirect: Exhibit Date Disputes and Timeline Clarification 00:37:08 - Recross: Determining When Paula Left the Home Lindsay Clancy Trial Playlist:    • MA v Lindsay Clancy - Jury Selection Day 1
