Ex-husband and father of the victims, Patrick Clancy, testifies in the trial of MA v. Lindsay Clancy: Family Background and Early Postpartum Experiences • Patrick and Lindsay Clancy were married in December 2016 and had three children: Cora (born 2017), Dawson (born 2019), and Callan (born May 2022). • Lindsay worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Mass General Hospital. • After the births of her first two children, Lindsay suffered physical trauma and significant tearing that required time to heal. • While on maternity leave, Lindsay's mood was generally good, but she consistently developed high anxiety as her return-to-work dates approached, struggling deeply with the idea of being separated from her children. Mental Health Decline and Medication Escalation (Fall 2022) • Following a positive summer after Callan's birth, Lindsay's anxiety flared up again in September 2022 in anticipation of returning to work. • While at a wedding in September, Lindsay informed Patrick she wanted to get a prescription for Zoloft to manage her stress. • Over the next few months, she rapidly switched between multiple psychiatric providers (including Jennifer Tufts, Julie Paul, and Rebecca Jollotta) and was prescribed a complex regimen of medications. • Patrick observed that her mental health only deteriorated during this time; she experienced severe insomnia, weight loss, and worsening depression. She also expressed fear that she was addicted to the benzodiazepines she had been prescribed. • Patrick was unaware at the time that Lindsay barely took many of her prescribed medications; a bag of pill bottles later turned over to police showed she took very few or zero pills from several 30-day prescriptions, including Ativan, Buspar, and Hydroxyzine. Suicidal Ideation, Intrusive Thoughts, and Hospitalizations (December 2022 - January 2023) • After starting Seroquel in early December, Lindsay experienced a "big spiral," telling Patrick she was having suicidal thoughts, though she denied having a specific plan. • She also disclosed experiencing "intrusive thoughts" of harming the children. Patrick noted this was highly confusing because she displayed no intention of acting on these thoughts, did not have a plan, and would immediately resume making them lunch or playing with them. • Due to her escalating suicidal statements, Patrick brought her to the Mass General Hospital emergency department in mid-December, leading to a brief evaluation at a day program in Rhode Island that was ultimately deemed a poor fit. • On December 31, 2022, they returned to Mass General, resulting in Lindsay's transfer to McLean Hospital for inpatient psychiatric care. She stayed there until January 5, 2023. Patrick was largely unaware of the exact therapy sessions she participated in or declined while admitted. Apparent Improvement (January 2023) • Following her discharge from McLean, Patrick checked in with Lindsay daily; she reported that she was no longer having suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming the children. • Her mood appeared to significantly improve, and she actively participated in family outings, including a trip to the Museum of Science, Cora's birthday party, and a water park in Hyannis. • Patrick felt hopeful that she was recovering and was comfortable leaving her home alone with the children while he went to brunch with friends and skiing with Cora. Events of January 24, 2023 • On the day of the incident, Patrick noted that Lindsay seemed happy and was having "one of her best days". • She took Cora to a doctor's appointment in the morning, built a snowman with the kids, and texted cheerfully with Patrick throughout the day. • Around 4:53 p.m., Lindsay texted Patrick to suggest getting dinner takeout from a restaurant in Plymouth called 3V.
