The KZN Hawks officer was questioned about more than R3 million in cash transactions, including deposits exceeding R300 000, a nearly R300,000 payment routed through an accountant and money Govender says came from legitimate loans and family-related financial arrangements. Evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson SC questioned Govender's explanations, while the commission raised concerns about the unusual movement of the money. Chaskalson said one transaction had the “hallmarks of money laundering” - an allegation Govender rejected. But the financial questions are particularly significant because of allegations surrounding the 2023 killing of Bevan Loftus and four other men in Durban. IPID previously alleged that Govender received more than R2.7 million in connection with Loftus's killing, while Gregory Loftus, Bevan's father, told the commission that he had sought an urgent interdict to stop police from killing his son the day before Bevan was shot dead. Govender has denied the allegations against him.
