Ubriachi alla guida, una notte con la Polizia Locale tra patenti sospese e sanzioni penali
A Saturday night with the men and women of the local police force, following breathalyzer tests on drivers navigating the streets of Naples' nightlife. Drunk driving is statistically one of the leading causes of fatal accidents. This statistic is increasingly affecting young people, especially those who carelessly get behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated, turning what should be a simple means of transportation into a truly lethal weapon capable of ending lives. The officers of the Territorial Intervention Group and the San Lorenzo Operational Unit, led by Commander Second Lieutenant Alessandro Autore, know this well. They take to the streets every night to apprehend those who recklessly decide to drive under the influence. Commander Alessandro Autore "Operating at night and on weekends always carries a greater risk," explains Commander Autore. "It's easier to encounter individuals who are highly intoxicated and who don't respect the speed limit. For these and many other reasons, my men and I must exercise the utmost caution during our operations. It is essential to be empathetic towards those stopped, but at the same time, the utmost firmness and professionalism are required to ensure our safety and, above all, that of motorists. This time, we operated in the Chiaia area, known for its nightlife, and in the Coroglio area, where thousands of young people travel every weekend to reach the many clubs. Operation Summary During the operations, which continued throughout the night, local officers checked over fifty vehicles, and five drivers had their licenses suspended. Those whose blood alcohol level was found to be between 0.5 and 0.8 over the legal limit were charged with an administrative offense, which carries a fine of €573 to €2,170 and a license suspension of three to six months. Those found to have a blood alcohol level between 0.8 and 1.5 over the legal limit face harsher penalties. In this case, fines ranging from €800 to €3,200 and a license suspension of 6 to 12 months are applicable. Commander Ciro Esposito Local Police Commander Ciro Esposito summarizes the operation and emphasizes the importance of checks in preventing accidents: "Every day, we carry out checks throughout the city to prevent accidents and improper behavior by those who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We also hold a series of meetings in schools to raise awareness among young people about the issues and risks of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. As was evident from last night's checks, numerous vehicles were stopped and drivers fined. This is because there is still a widespread sense of irresponsibility among drivers, even though it would be crucial to raise their awareness. Not for fear of receiving a fine, but because responsible behavior is the foundation of civilized living. Commander Esposito offers simple yet effective advice to drivers: "Getting behind the wheel without drinking is obviously the first piece of advice. And when driving in a group, it's important that even just one person is sober so they can be entrusted with driving. Driving in optimal conditions is essential to avoid distractions that could negatively impact the lives of victims, but also those of those who cause the accident."
