The AES Called Algeria an Enemy. Then Algeria Sent Fighter Jets.

Algeria sent fighter jets to Niger after the Niamey mutiny, and the story behind it is stranger than the headline. Sixteen months ago the AES called Algeria an enemy. This is what changed. Four Su-30s landed at Niamey. That part made the news. What most coverage skipped is what landed behind them: an Il-78 refuelling tanker and an Il-76 heavy transport. Four fighters on their own is a photograph. Fighters plus fuel plus crews and spare parts is a package built to stay. And then there's who sent it. In April 2025, Algeria shot down a Malian drone near Tin Zaouatine. The AES called it an aggression against the entire confederation. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger all pulled their ambassadors out of Algiers and both sides closed their airspace. Go back further and it gets sharper still: in 2023, President Tebboune condemned the coup that brought Tiani to power and refused military intervention in Niger outright. That is the same president who has now sent combat aircraft to protect that government. This is also the most significant deployment of Algerian combat aircraft abroad since 1973, from a country whose constitution restricts sending forces overseas.
