NIGER Coup: The Country Nobody Expected Has Been Named

A Nigerien army captain has gone on Niger's national television, RTN, with the first public account of the network allegedly behind the failed August 29 coup attempt in Niamey — and the names go far beyond France. Captain Roger Gabriel of the 1st Parachute Battalion describes the phone calls he says he received while mutineers held Air Base 101: a Chadian colonel allegedly telling him an operation was being prepared from Chad with French special forces, a message he attributes to the leadership of Chad's own air force, WhatsApp messages from a former adviser to ousted president Mohamed Bazoum promising that "French partners" were ready, and claims of green lights at ECOWAS level, with Benin and Côte d'Ivoire also mentioned.
