THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEFEND HIM | PNP General Óscar Arriola confirmed that the businessman kidnapped in Trujillo was not rescued directly by the police, but released after negotiations with his captors. The statement caused discomfort during the presentation of the operation's results, in which Defense Minister Rafael Belaúnde also participated. Mining businessman Jenss Lara was kidnapped on August 30 after a group of criminals staged a police intervention. Four people who were with him were killed. Lara was later released, and the police arrested suspected accomplices in the case. Amid the investigation, an audio recording of Arriola's interrogation of one of the detainees was also released. According to the detainee's account, the plan not only involved kidnapping the businessman but also murdering him. The detainee reportedly stated that Lara stopped paying protection money to ‘Los Pulpos’ and began receiving protection from ‘La Jauría,’ which allegedly motivated the retaliation. Arriola’s actions have once again raised questions about his continued leadership of the National Police. Interior Minister César Astudillo affirmed that the commander general is “technically qualified” for the position, given the training and specializations required to reach the institution’s high command. However, he clarified that this assessment does not constitute an endorsement of his continued tenure and maintained that all members of the National Police are under evaluation. When asked directly if he would request Arriola’s resignation, Astudillo replied, “Not yet.” The commander general’s tenure is also contingent on a two-year term, while Congress debates initiatives to incorporate new grounds for his removal. Congresswoman Cecilia Chacón, from the Fuerza Popular party, defended Arriola’s continued service as long as he remains head of the National Police. He maintained that he should receive the appropriate support while he remains at the head of the institution and that any evaluation of his continued tenure must be carried out through established procedures. In contrast, members of parliament from other parties have called for his removal and questioned the results of the police leadership in the face of the rise of organized crime. Senator Mirtha Vásquez argued that simply modifying the laws is insufficient and raised the need to strengthen the intelligence and operational capacity of the National Police.
