Operations began in the autumn of 1944 when the A-4 ballistic rocket, known colloquially as the V-2, struck targets from Dutch street launch sites with zero warning. Traveling its maximum two-hundred-mile range in just five minutes, the missile reached altitudes of fifty miles before falling on its target at nearly three thousand miles per hour. Following the cessation of European hostilities, British forces initiated Operation Backfire at Cuxhaven, bringing together captured German engineers to reassemble, test, and launch these complex weapons to study their ballistics and logistics. The mechanical anatomy of the rocket showcased an unprecedented level of chemical engineering. Driven by a combustion chamber burning alcohol and liquid oxygen, the propulsion system relied on a turbine developing six hundred horsepower to pump eight and a half tons of fuel within sixty seconds. The steam turbine itself was driven by a reaction between hydrogen peroxide and sodium permanganate. Guidance was governed by two precision gyroscopes located in the nose compartment, which transmitted electrical corrections to carbon vanes positioned directly within the fiery exhaust jet.
