Masters of Thrust: Goddard, Von Braun, and the Race to Space

The journey to the stars began not with a massive government agency, but in the quiet backyards of Massachusetts. In 1926, Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard, a solitary physicist, defied fierce skepticism to launch the world's first liquid-propelled rocket. Harassed by local fire departments and dismissed by the press as the "Moon Rocket Man," Goddard was forced to move his operations to the desolate, sun-baked plains of Roswell, New Mexico. Funded by a grant secured by aviation legend Charles Lindbergh, Goddard erected a 60-foot launch tower in Eden Valley, surrounded only by silence and sagebrush. Working with extreme privacy, he and a small, fiercely loyal team engineered complex gyroscopic stabilizers, designed intricate turbo pumps, and fought terrifying engine fires. Throughout the 1930s, Goddard wrestled with the complex problems of combining gasoline and liquid oxygen, ultimately developing a sophisticated control system using nitrogen gas pressure and steering vanes. His flights reached altitudes of up to 9,000 feet, confirming him as the absolute leader in liquid-fueled rocket technology. Yet, despite these monumental achievements, Goddard preferred to work entirely alone, often refusing to share information even with eager young engineers who revered him as the grand old man of rocketry. His foundational work, including the development of Jet Assisted Takeoff (JATO) for the Navy's heavily loaded seaplanes during World War II, proved the feasibility of rocket propulsion. Discover the incredible isolation, relentless determination, and brilliant engineering that defined Robert Goddard’s lifelong pursuit of the cosmos.
