A passenger ferry capsized on Sunday off the coast of Northern Cyprus, shortly after departing from the port of Kyrenia bound for the Turkish city of Tasucu. There were 267 people on board, and according to local authorities, at least eight died and 17 remain missing. Videos captured by passengers show moments of panic inside the vessel, as some tried to put on life jackets and others screamed desperately as the ship capsized. The cause of the sinking has not yet been determined, although one rescued passenger reported hearing an explosion at the bow before the ferry overturned. Survivors also reported alleged deficiencies in safety measures and a lack of sufficient life jackets and crew assistance. The captain and seven other crew members were detained while the investigation and search for the missing continue.
