The 2026 celebration marks 60 years since 1966, when local resident and social worker Rhaune Laslett organised a children’s street party intended to bring together a community affected by conflict, racial tension and poor housing. Russell Henderson’s Steel Band joined the festivities and began processing through Portobello Road, helping provide the spark for what would develop into the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival. Today, the organisers describe Notting Hill Carnival as Europe’s largest cultural event and the world’s second-largest carnival. Sunday’s Carnival began with J’Ouvert from 6:00–9:00am, followed by the Official Opening Ceremony from 10:00–10:30am at the Mas Judging Point on Great Western Road.
