Crown Prince Haakon automatically succeeded to the Norwegian throne after Harald died peacefully on August 28, 2026, at the age of 89. Haakon, 53, is now Norway’s King Haakon VIII. Footage shows the new king arriving at an extraordinary Council of State, shaking hands with ministers and taking his seat for the meeting. The Norwegian royal flag was also being prepared to be raised at the Royal Palace. Harald had been Norway’s monarch since 1991 and was one of Europe’s longest-serving reigning monarchs.
