New Fast Lines Take Shape as Huddersfield Canopy Lift Hits a Problem (Transpennine Route Upgrade)

New fast lines are beginning to take shape between Bradley Junction and Mirfield, while an overnight canopy lift at Huddersfield Railway Station encounters an unexpected alignment problem. This packed TransPennine Route Upgrade update covers engineering works carried out during the weekend closure of 22–23 August, with the main line closed between Bradley Junction and Dewsbury. At Huddersfield Railway Station, excavation continues around the original subway, while the new subway extension and staircase are becoming increasingly visible. The station compound is also being used to assemble the new platform canopies, with smaller sections already installed over Platform 6 and the finger canopy covering Platforms 3 and 4. At Mirfield Railway Station, freight activity provides an indication of the scale of the weekend engineering works. Wagons are seen being loaded with spoil, while another train appears to be carrying ballast. A road-rail vehicle later arrives and begins drilling operations alongside the railway. During the early hours of Sunday morning, engineering and operations teams at Huddersfield prepare for a major canopy lift over Platforms 4 and 5. The operation continues into the night, with the panel raised and held while checks are carried out. By daylight, however, the canopy has been returned to its assembly position after it could not be correctly aligned. The issue is not expected to delay the wider station construction programme. Further east, significant progress is visible between Bradley Junction and Mirfield. The future fast-line alignment through the Heaton Curve is becoming increasingly clear, with drainage, ballast, sleepers and rails appearing across the new formation following an intensive weekend of work. The newly installed railway provides an early glimpse of the future Huddersfield Up Fast Line and how the railway through Mirfield will eventually change when Platform 3 is decommissioned. The update also examines a small section of track around Newgate Underbridge that has not yet been connected, potentially due to the position of existing signalling infrastructure. The video concludes back at Huddersfield Station, where TransPennine Express unit 802217 prepares to form service 9Z40 to Liverpool Lime Street.
