Mosasaurus: The Lizard That Went Back to the Sea

Around 1780, quarrymen cutting chalk outside a Dutch town found a skull a metre and a half long, belonging to no animal anyone could name. That skull went on to do something no fossil had done before. It convinced people that species can end. Before it, extinction was not a fact — it was an idea most educated people rejected. The animal it belonged to was a lizard. A lizard that walked into the sea and never came back out. Over roughly thirty-two million years, mosasaurs went from metre-long coastal animals with four working legs to twelve-metre predators at the top of every ocean on Earth. They gave up the ability to stand. They lost the option of laying eggs on a beach, and gave birth in open water instead. They grew a tail fin like a shark's — a fact we only confirmed in 2013, when a specimen came out of the rock in Jordan with the outline of its flesh preserved. And they hunted by sight, not smell. Cast the inside of a mosasaur braincase and the parts that handle scent are barely developed. A shark follows blood across a kilometre of water. A mosasaur had to see you. This is the story of where they came from, how they lived, how they died — and what happened to the skull that started it all. It is still in Paris.
