7 Ancient Sites in New Brunswick Hiding Unanswered Questions

New Brunswick’s human history stretches back nearly 13,000 years, but many of its most important archaeological sites remain unknown to most Canadians. Across the province, ancient burial grounds, Ice Age campsites, coastal settlements, portage routes, and entire villages have been discovered beneath forests, highways, city streets, and reservoirs. Some were found through careful archaeological research. Others survived because Indigenous communities preserved their histories across generations. This documentary explores seven remarkable ancient sites in New Brunswick: The Augustine Mound, where more than 1,000 copper beads and rare preserved textiles revealed connections stretching toward the Lake Superior region and the ancient Adena tradition. The Oxbow site at Metepenagiag, where layers of hearths, pottery, tools, and shelters preserve approximately 3,000 years of Mi’kmaq history. The Route 8 campsite near Fredericton, where archaeologists uncovered an intact Ice Age hearth dating back approximately 12,700 years. The Bentley Street Archaeological Site near the Reversing Falls, where an ancient Wolastoqey portage corridor survives among the streets of modern Saint John. Teacher’s Cove in Passamaquoddy Bay, where shell middens challenged long-held assumptions about how Indigenous communities lived through the seasons. Indian Beach on Grand Manan, part of a much older Peskotomuhkati maritime landscape that remains only partially documented. And Mehtawtik, the principal village of the Wolastoqiyik, now lying beneath the waters of the Mactaquac headpond. Together, these sites reveal a history far older, more connected, and more vulnerable than most people realize. Many parts of New Brunswick have never been systematically surveyed, while coastal erosion, construction, flooding, and rising sea levels continue to destroy evidence before archaeologists can study it.
