His Van Broke Down After 4 Days—Now He’s Replacing the Engine (243/500)

His Van Life Dream Blew Up—Can He Save the Van? After spending two years converting a Ford E-350 box van into a camper, van lifer Maxwell Peters made it only four days into his first trip before the engine failed. Now he’s facing an even bigger challenge: removing the damaged engine and replacing it himself. In this reaction video, I follow Maxwell as he begins his first-ever engine swap. What initially appeared to be an external head-gasket leak proves much more serious when he discovers oil in the coolant. Faced with a repair estimate of approximately $15,000, Maxwell finds a remanufactured 5.4L engine and decides to tackle the replacement with help from his dad. We watch as he dismantles the front of the Ford Econoline, works through the cramped E-350 engine compartment, disconnects the transmission and finally pulls the engine after three days of work. This is the second chapter in a van-life story worth following. Maxwell’s experience shows how quickly a dream trip can change—and how determination, curiosity and a willingness to learn can keep that dream alive.
