As sunlight disappears, pressure rises, temperatures fall, and life begins to follow rules completely different from those at the surface. The descent begins where sunlight starts to weaken. In the twilight zone, familiar colors fade and animals rely increasingly on large eyes, reflective bodies, transparency, and bioluminescence. Many creatures migrate toward the surface at night before returning to deeper water before sunrise. Below lies the midnight zone, where natural sunlight disappears completely. Here, darkness is permanent. Animals produce their own light to communicate, attract prey, confuse predators, or disappear into the black water surrounding them.
